About

I am Alfons Hoekstra, and currently hold a position as full Professor in Computational Science and Engineering at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

I am director of the of the Informatics Institute of the Faculty of Science.

I am affiliated with the Computational Science Lab, one of the research groups of the Informatics Institute.

Can we predict your, my, or our future? Not only tomorrow’s weather at my location, but maybe also my and your health in the near or not so near future, or our well-being in the urban environment where we live in?

And if we can, we should be able to make our world a better place. The Computational Sciences, is my strong believe, are very much needed to contribute to the major challenges that we face, from the energy transition and global warming to well being and healthy living in overcrowded urban environments.

This believe, and the fact that every day we get a little better in predicting your, my, and our future keeps me going and drives my research forward.

On January 19th, 2020, I presented my inaugural address, explaining in a bit more detail my ideas on if and how we can predict your future. A video and are full text are available online (all in Dutch).
